Addie Sheppard is a 17-year-old high school student, recently forced into the position of Witch. All she really wants is to go home.

Barty is Addie's family cat. He has followed her into this world of magic and wonders--he may even be part of the reason she's there. The power of speech is fairly new to him.

Christopher Thorne is a Gatekeeper, one of the guardians of the ways between worlds. Having ditched his apprenticeship to another Witch some years back, he has attached himself to Addie.

Lucy Cardiff is the previous Witch of World 26. She lived, apparently alone, in an old house on an old street, in an old and quiet part of town. The very night she spoke to Addie, she mysteriously disappeared.

Kasanthy is the Witch of World Seven and is more or less permanently grouchy. Unusually for a Witch, she knows no magic.

Thonos Damos is the Witch of World 15. He is slightly overworked, but always jovial.

Miria is in charge of running the Gateway. On top of keeping everything organized, she also puts up with hotheaded teenagers.

Mr. Thorne is Christopher's father.

Mrs. Thorne is Christopher's mother.

Melissa is Addie's friend from school. It seems that she has been involved in stranger things than Addie has, and for longer.

Gwen is Melissa's older sister. A talented but inexperienced magician, she is the pride of her parents.

Simon is Gwen and Melissa's cousin. He aspires to be both a medical doctor and a magical healer.

Dad is Gwen and Melissa's father. Who knows what he's got up his sleeve? Besides his arm, I mean.

Naianth is Gwen and Melissa's mother. She makes killer fried eggs.

Alin lives and works with the Searls, serving some unknown purpose.
